# Register for Cl@ve > How to register for Cl@ve, the Spanish state's online ID for Social Security and other state services. - Page: https://autonomo.eus/steps/clave - Part: Part B: Settle in - For: Everyone - Last checked: 14 October 2026 Cl@ve is the Spanish state's online ID, used for Social Security and other state services. **The three Haciendas Forales do not list it, so use it alongside BakQ, not instead of it.** ## Before you start - Your NIE, on your [TIE](https://autonomo.eus/steps/tie-card), EU registration certificate or residence permit - Your passport, or your national ID card if you are an EU citizen - A mobile phone. A Spanish or foreign number works. - An email address ## What it unlocks - Import@ss, the Social Security online office - Other state services, such as the traffic authority (DGT) ## How to do it Choose one way to register: - **Online with your FNMT certificate:** use this if you already have [your certificate](https://autonomo.eus/steps/fnmt-certificate). On the [Spanish tax agency's Cl@ve page](https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es/Sede/clave.html), choose "Registrarse en Cl@ve con certificado o DNI electrónico" (register with a certificate or electronic DNI). Choose your certificate, type the support number (*número de soporte*) printed on your ID card, check your details, then enter your mobile number twice and your email twice. For a foreign number, add the country code. Tick the box to accept the conditions and press "Enviar" (send). You get an SMS with a PIN, an activation code for Cl@ve Permanente on screen, and a PDF receipt with "Visualizar PDF" (view PDF). - **In person:** at a Cl@ve registration office (*oficina de registro*), with your ID documents. Find one with the [state office finder](https://administracion.gob.es/informacion/buscador-de-oficinas). Offices of the Spanish tax agency, Social Security, the state employment service (SEPE) and the Government Delegation register people, and many need an appointment. If you are not sure what to bring, call the state information line on 060. - **By invitation letter:** on the same [Cl@ve page](https://sede.agenciatributaria.gob.es/Sede/clave.html), choose "Registrarse en Cl@ve", identify yourself with your NIE and the support number on your card, and ask for an invitation letter. It goes by post to the address the Spanish tax agency has for you. When it arrives, choose "Ya dispongo de una carta invitación" (I already have an invitation letter) and type the 16-character code. This gives the basic level only, which [does not work for every procedure](https://clave.gob.es/clave_Home/registro/Como-puedo-registrarme.html). [Online registration by video](https://clave.gob.es/registro/como-puedo-registrarme/registro-basico-internet-videoidentificacion-automatica) is only open to holders of a Spanish DNI. Once registered, you can log in three ways: Cl@ve Móvil (approve on your phone), Cl@ve Permanente (a password) or Cl@ve PIN (a short code for occasional use).
