# Get your FNMT digital certificate > How to get the free FNMT digital certificate to identify yourself and sign online with Social Security, the Haciendas Forales and state offices. - Page: https://autonomo.eus/steps/fnmt-certificate - Part: Part B: Settle in - For: Everyone - Last checked: 14 October 2026 The FNMT certificate lets you identify yourself and sign online with Social Security, all three Haciendas Forales and most state offices. It is free. ## Before you start - Your [TIE](https://autonomo.eus/steps/tie-card) or EU registration certificate, showing your NIE - Your passport, or your national ID card if you are an EU citizen - A computer with a web browser - An email address ## What it unlocks - Filing online with your Hacienda Foral and Social Security - [Register for Cl@ve](https://autonomo.eus/steps/clave) online - Online permit applications through the UGE ## How to do it Do every step on the same computer and the same user account. Do not reformat the computer between the request and the download. 1. Set up your browser as the FNMT website explains. On the [FNMT setup page](https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-software/configuracion-previa), download and install the "Configurador FNMT-RCM" (FNMT setup program) for Windows, macOS or Linux. 2. Request the certificate online on the [FNMT request page](https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-software/solicitar-certificado). You choose a password there. Write it down: you need it to download the certificate, and it cannot be recovered. You get a request code (*código de solicitud*) by email. 3. Prove your identity at an identity office (*oficina de acreditación de identidad*). Find one with the [FNMT office locator](https://mapaoficinascert.appspot.com): type your address and it shows the nearest offices on a map. Offices of Social Security and the Spanish tax agency need an appointment. Video identification, for a fee, is only open to holders of a valid Spanish DNI, so with a TIE you go in person. The [FNMT identity page](https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-software/acreditar-identidad) says to bring your request code and: - **Non-EU citizens:** the foreigner ID card that shows your NIE, plus your passport. Or the official document that gave you your NIE, plus your passport. - **EU citizens:** your EU registration certificate that shows your NIE, plus your passport or national ID card. Or the official document that gave you your NIE, plus your passport or national ID card. 4. About 1 hour later, download the certificate from the [FNMT download page](https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-software/descargar-certificado) with your request code. Enter your details exactly as you did in step 2. 5. Make a backup copy of the certificate. Export it to a file protected with a password: - **Chrome or Edge on Windows:** open the settings, then "Privacidad y seguridad" (privacy and security), "Seguridad" (security) and "Gestionar certificados" (manage certificates). Select your certificate, press "Exportar" (export), choose "Exportar la clave privada" (export the private key) and set a password. - **Firefox:** open the certificate manager, select your certificate under "Sus certificados" (your certificates) and press "Hacer copia" (back up). Set a password. The file ends in .p12. - Keep the file and its password somewhere other than your computer. Identifying yourself by video instead costs €2.99 plus tax, and needs a valid Spanish DNI. - Time: you can download the certificate about 1 hour after your visit. ## Common mistakes - Bringing only your NIE number. The number alone does not prove who you are. Bring the card or certificate that shows it. - Not making a backup.
