# Understand your monthly fee

> How your monthly Social Security fee as an autónomo is worked out, including the flat fee for new autónomos and the 2026 brackets.

**Your monthly Social Security fee depends on the net income you expect to earn.** New autónomos who qualify pay a reduced flat fee of €88.64 a month for the first 12 months.

## The flat fee for new autónomos

- You pay €80 a month plus the 0.9% intergenerational equity charge (*MEI*): €88.64 in total, for 12 months.
- You get 12 more months at the same fee if your net income for the year stays below the minimum wage. Ask for the extension with the Import@ss service [Prórroga de la tarifa plana](https://portal.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/importass/importass/Categorias/Altas%2C+bajas+y+modificaciones/Bajas+y+modificaciones/Prorroga_tarifa_plana) (flat fee extension): press "Solicitar" (apply) before your first 12 months end. It is not automatic. If your income ends up at or above the minimum wage, you pay back the difference.
- To keep the extension, file your income tax return (*IRPF*) for the year. If you do not, Social Security uses a contribution base of €1,000 for that year.
- You qualify if you were not registered as an autónomo in the last 2 years, or 3 years if you had the flat fee before.
- People with a disability of 33% or more, and victims of gender violence or terrorism, get a longer reduction. The Social Security guide explains it.

## The normal fee

After the flat fee, your fee depends on your bracket. Take your expected monthly net income, minus a 7% allowance for expenses, and find your bracket below. Your fee is 31.5% of your contribution base, and you can choose any base inside your bracket.

To see your own figure, open the [Social Security fee simulator](https://portal.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/importass/importass/tramites/simuladorRETAPublico/inicio/) (*Calculadora de cuotas para autónomos 2026*). Pick the range of monthly net income you expect. It shows your fee and what each part pays for.
