Your residence and work permit for self-employment (*autorización de residencia temporal y trabajo por cuenta propia*) has an end date, printed on your TIE. To keep living and working in Spain, you renew it. **Apply in the 2 months before your permit expires. If you apply in time, your permit stays valid until the office decides.** The renewed permit lasts 4 years and lets you work as an employee or as an autónomo anywhere in Spain.

## Before you start

- Your current TIE and your passport. You need a full copy of a valid passport.
- Form EX-07, filled in and signed, from the [Ministry of Inclusion forms page](https://www.inclusion.gob.es/web/migraciones/modelos-generales). Choose "Formulario autorización de residencia temporal y trabajo por cuenta propia". There is an editable version you can fill in on screen. Mark renewal (*renovación*) as the type of authorisation you ask for.
- Proof that you are still registered as an autónomo and owe nothing to Social Security
  - Get the certificate of being up to date (*certificado de estar al corriente en las obligaciones de la Seguridad Social*) from [Import@ss](https://portal.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/importass/importass/Categorias/Consulta+de+pagos+y+deudas/CCertificado+de+estar+al+corriente+en+las+obligaciones+de+la+Seguridad+Social). The Ministry's sheet does not list this document, but the renewal depends on it, so have it ready.
- Proof that you owe nothing to your [Hacienda Foral](https://autonomo.eus/steps/hacienda-foral): a certificate of being up to date with tax (*certificado de estar al corriente de obligaciones tributarias*). Same reason.
- If you have children of compulsory school age: a report from the school that they are enrolled (*informe de escolarización*). See [Find a school](https://autonomo.eus/steps/school).
- To apply online: your [FNMT digital certificate](https://autonomo.eus/steps/fnmt-certificate) and the free [Autofirma](https://firmaelectronica.gob.es/Home/Descargas.html) program to sign the forms.
- Any foreign document, translated by a sworn translator (*traductor jurado*) and legalised or apostilled.

## How to do it

1. **Check your dates.** You can apply from 2 months before the expiry date on your TIE. You can still apply up to 3 months after it, but the office can open a sanction procedure against you for the late application. After those 3 months, you no longer have a permit to renew: see a lawyer at once.
2. **Choose how you qualify.** The usual case is that you continue the activity your permit was granted for and have met your tax and Social Security obligations. The Ministry's sheet also accepts other situations: a family member who meets the income rules to support you, receiving the benefit for ending your activity (*prestación por cese de actividad*), being an economically dependent autónomo whose contract ended for reasons outside your control, receiving unemployment benefit, or receiving a public benefit aimed at your social or work integration. If you cannot prove a requirement, you can add a positive integration report (*informe de esfuerzo de integración*) from the Basque Government.
3. **Fill in and sign form EX-07.** Scan your passport and your other documents as PDF files.
4. **Apply online through Mercurio.** Open [Mercurio](https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/mercurio2), the Government's online filing service for immigration applications. Log in with your digital certificate or electronic DNI. The Mercurio page does not list Cl@ve. Choose "Renovaciones de autorización de residencia temporal y trabajo por cuenta propia", attach your form and documents, sign with Autofirma and submit. Download the receipt (*justificante*), a PDF with the date your application was registered. A lawyer, *gestor administrativo* or *graduado social* can also file for you with their professional access. If you cannot apply online, see the in-person route under Where.
5. **Pay the two fees within 10 working days** of the office admitting your application. Both are yours to pay:
   - Form 790 código 052, section 2.2.3 "renovación de residencia temporal y trabajo por cuenta ajena y propia": €16.40. Fill it in on the [Government's fee page for 790 código 052](https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/tasa052): choose your province, then pay online with a digital certificate or Cl@ve, or click "Obtener Documento" (get the document), print it and pay at a bank.
   - Form 790 código 062, section 3.3.2 "autorización de trabajo para autorizaciones renovadas de residencia temporal de trabajo por cuenta propia": €81.54. Same steps on the [Government's fee page for 790 código 062](https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/tasa062).
   - If you paid at a bank, send the stamped proof to the office through Mercurio, under adding documents to an open file (*aportación de documentos*). Without the proof, the office does not finish your file.
6. **Track your file** on the [Government's status service](https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/infoext2) ("Información sobre el estado de tramitación de los expedientes de extranjería"). You can also send an SMS with the word NIE and your NIE number to 651 714 610, as on [Change your status](https://autonomo.eus/steps/change-status).

## Where

- **Online:** through [Mercurio](https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/pagina/index/directorio/mercurio2). This is the route the Ministry's sheet gives.
- **In person:** at the immigration office (*Oficina de Extranjería*) of the province where you live: Vitoria-Gasteiz, Bilbao or Donostia/San Sebastián. Book an appointment (*cita previa*) first in the [Government's appointment system](https://icp.administracionelectronica.gob.es/icpplus/index.html). Choose your province, then the procedure for renewals, extensions and changes (*renovación, prórroga o modificación*). Bring the originals and copies of every document. Addresses and phones: [contact the immigration office](https://autonomo.eus/steps/offices#contact-the-immigration-office).
- **Questions:** the [immigration office enquiry form](https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/ayuda/consulta/extranjeriacg). Choose your province's office under "Oficina".

## Cost and time

- Cost: €16.40 (form 790 código 052) plus €81.54 (form 790 código 062). Later, €19.30 for the new TIE card. The amounts come from Orden PJC/617/2025, in force since 16 June 2025, and change only when a State budget law raises them.
- Time: the office has 3 months to answer, counted from the day after your application is registered. If 3 months pass with no answer, your renewal counts as granted (*silencio administrativo positivo*).
- What you get: a renewed permit valid for 4 years. It lets you work as an employee (*por cuenta ajena*) and as an autónomo (*por cuenta propia*), in any sector, anywhere in Spain.

## After you apply

- **Keep working.** Filing in time extends your old permit until the office decides. Your receipt from Mercurio or the office proves it. You stay registered as an autónomo and keep paying your fees as normal.
- **The decision** (*resolución*) arrives by post or by electronic notification. Read it carefully. If it is a refusal, it tells you how to appeal and the deadline. Get [free legal help](https://autonomo.eus/steps/legal-help) the same week.
- **Request your new TIE within 1 month** of being notified. You go in person to the Policía Nacional. Book the fingerprint appointment on the [police appointment website](https://icp.administracionelectronica.gob.es/icpplus/index.html), choosing "POLICÍA-TOMA DE HUELLAS (EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA)". Pay the card fee with [form 790 código 012](https://sede.policia.gob.es/Tasa790_012/ImpresoRellenar), ticking "TIE que documenta la renovación de la autorización de residencia temporal": €19.30. Bring form EX-17, your passport, your old TIE, a photo and the decision. The steps are the same as for your first card: see [Get your TIE card](https://autonomo.eus/steps/tie-card).
- **If you hear nothing for 3 months,** the renewal is treated as granted. Ask the office in writing for a certificate that confirms it (*certificado acreditativo del silencio producido*). Under Ley 39/2015, article 24, the office must issue it within 15 days of your request. Take it to the police to request your TIE.

## If your permit is different

- **Arraigo and other permits for exceptional circumstances:** these last 1 year and are not renewed with the form on this page. Before yours expires, you apply to change it into a residence and work permit ([Ministry sheet 55: changing from a residence permit that allows work](https://www.inclusion.gob.es/web/migraciones/w/55.-modificacion-desde-situaciones-de-autorizaciones-de-residencia-temporal-que-habilitan-a-trabajar)) or, if you cannot, for an extension (*prórroga*) of the arraigo itself, which depends on meeting its own conditions ([Ministry sheet: arraigo social](https://www.inclusion.gob.es/web/migraciones/w/autorizacion-residencia-temporal-por-circunstancias-excepcionales.-arraigo-social)). Ask a lawyer which one fits your case.
- **Family of an EU or Spanish citizen:** your card follows its own rules. See [Get a family residence card](https://autonomo.eus/steps/family-card).
- **5 years of legal residence:** if you have lived in Spain legally and without a break for 5 years when your permit ends, apply for long-term residence (*residencia de larga duración*) instead, with form EX-11, in the same 2-month window ([Ministry sheet 49: long-term residence](https://www.inclusion.gob.es/web/migraciones/w/49.-autorizacion-de-residencia-de-larga-duracion-nacional)).

## Common mistakes

- Applying after the expiry date. Up to 3 months late, the office still processes the application but can fine you. Later than that, you have lost the permit.
- Owing money to Social Security or Hacienda. Renewal depends on being up to date. Pay any debt and get the certificates before you apply. Check first with the [Import@ss certificate](https://portal.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/importass/importass/Categorias/Consulta+de+pagos+y+deudas/CCertificado+de+estar+al+corriente+en+las+obligaciones+de+la+Seguridad+Social).
- Letting your town hall registration (*padrón*) lapse. The renewal sheet does not ask for it, but you need it for other steps, and non-EU residents without permanent residence must [renew it every 2 years](https://autonomo.eus/steps/padron).
- Paying only one fee, or paying late. Both forms, 790 código 052 and 790 código 062, are due within 10 working days of admission.
- Filing at the wrong place. In Bizkaia, the immigration office rejects renewals sent through the general electronic registry or another office's registry. Use Mercurio or the immigration office itself.
- Missing the 1-month deadline to request the new TIE. Book the police appointment the day the decision arrives.
- Renewing when you already qualify for long-term residence. After 5 years of legal residence, apply for *larga duración* with form EX-11 instead.
