# Enrol your children in school

> Enrol your children in school or a public nursery in Euskadi, including when you arrive during the school year.

School is compulsory from 6 to 16 and free from age 3. **Families who arrive during the year can enrol at any time**, and public nurseries for ages 0 to 2 are free in 2026-2027.

## Before you start

- [Your padrón certificate](https://autonomo.eus/steps/padron)
- Your family book (*libro de familia*) or your children's birth certificates
- Your residence permit and passports

## How to do it

1. Go to any school, or to the Basque Department of Education's office in your territory (*Delegación Territorial de Educación*). Find schools near you with the [Ikasgunea school finder](https://ikasgunea.euskadi.eus/es/buscador-de-centros) ("Buscador de centros"): filter by territory (*Territorio histórico*), town (*Municipio*), public or private (*Red*), language model (*Modelo*) and level. The delegation's address and phone are under Where, below.
2. Fill in the enrolment form. The school or the delegation gives it to you.
3. The school placement commission (*Comisión Territorial de Escolarización*) tells you which school your child will attend.

For a place from September, apply in the main admission period instead. For 2026-2027 it was 2 to 13 February 2026, online at [Ikasgunea](https://ikasgunea.euskadi.eus/es/inicio) or at your first-choice school. All three models teach English from age 4.

## Nursery, age 0 to 2

- Public nurseries (*Haurreskolak*) are free in 2026-2027.
- The main application window in 2026 was 13 April to 4 May, online at [ikasgunea.euskadi.eus](https://ikasgunea.euskadi.eus/es/inicio) or at any Haurreskola.
- For a place during the year, apply between the 1st and the 8th of any month, online at Ikasgunea or in person at the Haurreskola with the official form. If there is a free place, your child starts on the first working day of the next month. No new children start in June or July.
- **To find your nearest Haurreskola:** see the [Consorcio Haurreskolak website](http://www.haurreskolak.eus/), or call the Consorcio Haurreskolak on 943 821 750 or write to haurreskolak@haurreskolak.eus. Ask for the Haurreskolak near your home and their phone numbers, then call the one you want and ask if it has a free place.
