# Get your Social Security number

> How to find or request your Social Security number (NUSS), which you need before you can register as an autónomo.

Your Social Security number (*NUSS*) is your number with Spanish Social Security for life. **You need it to register as an autónomo.**

- Your NIE, or your passport
- An email address and a mobile phone number
- A phone or computer with a camera, for a photo

## How to do it

**If you have worked in Spain before,** you already have a number. Open the Import@ss service [Acreditación del Número de la Seguridad Social](https://portal.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/importass/importass/Categorias/Vida+laboral+e+informes/Informes+sobre+tu+situacion+laboral/Acreditacion_NUSS) (proof of your Social Security number) and press "Solicitar informe" (request the report). Log in with Cl@ve, your FNMT certificate, an electronic DNI or a code by SMS. If you have none of these, choose "Ninguno de los anteriores" (none of the above), fill in your details, take a selfie and upload a photo of your ID document. You get a PDF that shows your number.

**If you have never had a number:**

1. Open the Import@ss service [Solicitar el Número de la Seguridad Social](https://portal.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/importass/importass/Categorias/altas%2C+bajas+y+modificaciones/altas+y+afiliacion+de+trabajadores/solicitar+el+numero+de+la+seguridad+social) (request your Social Security number) and press "Solicitar NUSS".
2. Under "Elige tu método de identificación" (choose how to identify yourself), pick Cl@ve, your certificate or an electronic DNI. If you have no digital ID, choose "Ninguno de los anteriores" (none of the above). You do not need a digital ID for this. The SMS option does not work until you have a number.
3. Fill in your personal details, a mobile phone number, an email address and your home address. Social Security's form for this request is TA.1 (*Solicitud de número de la Seguridad Social y variación de datos*). The service asks you to upload a filled-in [form TA.1](https://www.seg-social.es/descarga/es/365) only when you apply for a child.
4. Take a selfie and upload a photo of both sides of your ID document. Social Security also asks for a selfie holding the front of the document.
5. Once Social Security assigns the number, it issues a decision (*resolución*) that you can print. After that, you can download proof of your number at any time with [Acreditación del Número de la Seguridad Social](https://portal.seg-social.gob.es/wps/portal/importass/importass/Categorias/Vida+laboral+e+informes/Informes+sobre+tu+situacion+laboral/Acreditacion_NUSS).
